The objective of the project is to collect and transport groundwater and stormwater runoff from the Dubai World Central area (about 135 km2) and adjacent communities (about 245 km2) that will be discharged into the Gulf. The tunnel drainage system must be robust enough to cope with increased urbanization, heavy rainfall, and high-level groundwater. This revolutionary tunnel will cope with both rainwater and groundwater and will drain nearly 40 percent of the entire urban area of Dubai and include the flagship Dubai South project, with Al Maktoum International Airport, the World Expo site, and many other emerging developments
